The Kamarupa Mandala is a sacred region that stretches from the Ganges River in the east to the Irrawaddy River in the west, and from the Himalayas in the north to the Bay of Ganga (Bay of Bengal) in the south.

At the heart of this region lies the Assam Valley, which is divided into two parts by the powerful Brahmaputra River. In ancient times, this river was known as the Lauhitya River, a Sanskrit name meaning “red river” or “river of blood.”

On the southern banks of the Brahmaputra, near the ancient city of Pragjotishpura (modern-day Guwahati), stands the sacred Nilachal Parbat, also called the Blue Hills. This place is believed to be the location of the sacred Yoni, or womb of the planet. For the people of Kamarupa, this is among the most sacred places on Earth.

At the foothills of Nilachal Parbat lies the sacred Kamakhya Lake, now known as Deepor Beel. In ancient times, when the Kamarupa Mandala was a thriving center of Dharma, trade, and culture, the land around Nilachal Parbat was covered in dense tropical forests. These forests once stretched from the Himalayan foothills all the way to the shores of the Bay of Ganga.

Today, only a small part of this forest remains. It is known as the Garbhangha Forest, located on the southern banks of Kamakhya Lake.

The Kamarupa Mandala is home to over 300 Indigenous communities, living across the region from Nepal to Kachin, and from the Himalayas to the Bay of Ganga. Over the past 200 years, these communities and their natural environment have faced severe displacement and loss.

The mission of the Church of the Mother Goddess is to help restore the Kamarupa Mandala. Its goal is to protect and support the sacred languages, cultures, traditions, ways of life, and spiritual lineages of the Indigenous communities who call this land home.
